Questions people ask
Which countries have the cheapest electricity?
Of the countries listed here, Ethiopia (about US$0.007 per kWh), Bhutan (US$0.013) and Egypt (US$0.019) have the cheapest household electricity. Much of it comes from hydropower or is subsidised.
Which countries have the most expensive electricity?
Ireland (about US$0.444 per kWh), the United Kingdom (US$0.440) and Germany (US$0.403) are the most expensive here, more than twice the world average of US$0.179.
How does India compare with Nepal?
A household unit costs about US$0.072 in India and US$0.038 in Nepal, so India pays roughly 1.9 times as much. Nepal gets most of its electricity from hydropower.
What does a unit cost in Pakistan?
The national household average is about PKR 15.9 per unit (US$0.057), but Pakistan uses slab tariffs. A home using around 300 units a month pays roughly PKR 40 a unit once fixed charges and 18% sales tax are added, so check the slab on your own bill.
Why are these numbers different from my bill?
They are national averages for a typical home. Your price depends on your slab or tariff, your supplier, fixed charges and taxes. For an account-specific estimate, use your supplier tariff including its slabs, fixed charges and taxes. Multiplying by a national average does not produce an exact bill.
