About climate calculator
Why this site exists
Climate Calculator helps readers connect everyday energy use and travel with estimated carbon dioxide emissions. It provides free tools, worked examples and explanations that show both the calculation and its limits.
Who publishes it?
The site is published under the name Free Carbon Calculator. For questions and corrections, contact climatedatanerd@gmail.com. This is an independent project; no government affiliation, professional certification or source-organization endorsement is claimed.
Our approach
We identify the units and source years behind factors, distinguish estimates from measurements, and explain what each result excludes. Software and explanatory drafts may be developed with AI assistance. Published source links and the visible methodology allow readers to check the calculations; AI assistance does not establish scientific validation.
The seven-step version 4.1 (30 October 2026) offers a partial educational energy and travel estimate with explicit assumptions. The separate bill/device and historical global-grid tools remain available. Calculation inputs stay in the browser; optional local saving belongs to the historical global-grid tool. New newsletter signups are paused pending service verification. Visitor-initiated sharing is optional. Results from different versions and boundaries should not be compared directly.
What is original here?
The site combines editable household inputs with visible calculations, worked scenarios and explanations of uncertainty. The appliance guides answer different questions: steady loads, fan comparisons, variable AC input and fridge energy labels. Country emission factors and third-party technical guidance belong to the credited source organizations; our calculations and explanatory examples do not turn those sources into endorsements.
Editorial and correction policy
- Examples must say whether they use invented assumptions, standardised labels or measured readings. An illustrative case is not presented as a household experiment.
- Data-dependent claims should identify the source and observation year. A recent page edit does not make an older dataset current.
- Calculation changes should be checked against stated inputs and documented with their limits. Software checks do not amount to scientific certification.
- Corrections can be sent to climatedatanerd@gmail.com. Include the page URL, disputed statement or inputs, expected result and a supporting source where available. Do not send utility-account details or other personal records.
When an error is confirmed, the affected explanation or calculation is revised and a dated note is added for a substantive change. There is no promised response time or independent peer-review claim.
Recent maintenance
30 October 2026: revised calculation bounds, household and travel allocation, optional prices and methodology version 4.1. 1 November 2026: published separate fan, AC and fridge guides. 2 November 2026: clarified homepage tool choices, added article summaries, and replaced overlapping lifestyle lists with a home-energy worksheet and a room-comfort guide. An unsupported legacy questionnaire was returned to draft, and new newsletter signups were paused while the privacy notice was corrected.
Funding and editorial independence
The tools are free. Advertising may support the site if enabled and approved. Advertising does not establish endorsement of an advertiser's products or change the published calculation formulas.
